The amber town of Ribnitz-Damgarten is located between the Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund on the south bank of the salt marshes connected to the Baltic Sea, as the gateway to the exciting coastal region. The town and its rural neighbourhoods are surrounded by a landscape that is beautiful and varied, as well as multi-faceted, colourful and notably original. The national park of the Western Pomeranian marsh landscape starts to the north of Ribnitz-Damgarten. To the west you have the Ribnitz Greate Moor and the Rostock Heath, as well as the Recknitztal to the south. As a nature reserve, it provides rare plants and animals threatened with extinction with protection and a habitat.
Culture, history, art and communication: if you believe the treasure hunter who searches for the "gold of the sea", there is nowhere else in northern Germany that is a better location for finding amber than the "German Amber Museum" in Ribnitz-Damgarten. In addition to fantastic enclaves, jewellery and artworks from various eras, the museum has an exhibition of amber in fascinating colours and follows the steps of the stones (which aren't really stones) back to their origins about 50 million years ago. New: a replica of a panel section from the plinth area of the forgotten Königsberg Amber Room. The museum has a small workshop where you can work the amber yourself. Also housed in the chapter house of the convent, there is an exhibit on the town history and the gallery of the art association for contemporary art, which is as informative and worth visiting. Artists from the region give you views into the local landscape.
Interesting sights nearby: the open-air museum of Klockenhagen: a very different type of museum opens its doors in the spring. Its 200-300 year old thatched low-German farmhouses, cottages and barns are fund to discover. Up close and personal experience with country living of the past doesn't only lead you to dream. Bread is baked every two weeks on Saturday in the still functional oven. Pigs, sheep, geese and other domestic animals like to be admired and pet. The annual thanksgiving festival ends the season with the annoucement of the most beautiful harvest crown. Gelbensande Hunting Lodge - about 6 km away. Marlow Bird Sanctuary - about 18 km away, Baltic Sea jewellery demonstration factory in the Damgarten district. All are invited for a cycling tour around the marshes, to the international folklore dance festival, the fishermen's festival, to gymkhanas, tun strike offs, archery festivals, children's festivals, traditional ceramics markets, for sailing and Zeesen boat tours on the marshes, etc...
