Did you know that the Paulinzella train station is located on the grounds of a former monastery? The station was built in 1895 on the Arnstadt-Saalfeld railway line and offers a unique opportunity to stay in a historic train station building. The Paulinzella Monastery - a significant and wealthy abbey
The Paulinzella Monastery was founded as a double monastery in 1102 by the Saxon noblewoman Paulina, daughter of the steward Moricho from the court of King Heinrich IV. The monastery was an important center of the Hirsau reform movement and owned extensive property in the region. The monastery was dissolved as a result of the Reformation in 1542 and converted into the Amt Paulinzella. A small hunting lodge for the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was built on the monastery grounds.
The Paulinzella Monastery Church - a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture
The Paulinzella Monastery Church was consecrated in 1124 and was built based on the model of the abbey church in Hirsau. It is a three-aisled basilica with transept, crossing tower, and semi-circular apse. The church is richly decorated with sculptures, capitals, and columns. The ruins of the Romanesque monastery church are one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany. They were rediscovered and appreciated in the 19th century during the Romantic period.
