Wichersoord Estate is the first newly developed estate on Walcheren in a century and a half. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the landscape of Walcheren served as the backdrop for more than 270 estates and manors, and the northwest coast of Walcheren was also known as the Gold Coast. Currently, only 12 remain.
With an area of 6.2 hectares, Wichersoord Estate is part of the traditional Zeeland hiking area Buiten Pekelynge, which is registered as over 18 hectares under the Nature Beauty Act. Forests surround a beautiful water feature, rich in fish and birds. It is decorated in the English landscape style with sloping lines and winding paths. Due to its location, the estate is connected to the Manteling, the beautiful forest and dune area between Domburg and Oostkapelle, with cycling and hiking trails.
From the 17th century onwards, prosperity in Walcheren increased significantly, partly thanks to various craft businesses in Middelburg and Vlissingen. Wealth was generated through income from foreign trade and the flourishing of related crafts. The shipyards of the companies also provided a lot of work. The affluent bourgeoisie (nobility and wealthy merchants) built country seats for themselves, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. Hence, for centuries, Walcheren was known as the garden of Zeeland, an idyllic island with small plots, green roads, pollard willows, green hedges, and vistas. It was definitively lost when the Allies bombed the dikes in 1944-1945 and the sea flooded the island for a year to drive out the occupiers.
The estate is not far from the broad beaches of Oostkapelle and Domburg, which are awarded the international Blue Flag. Nearby are several riding schools, the Domburgsche Golf Club, and the atmospheric village center of Domburg. Insiders claim Domburg is the oldest seaside resort in the Netherlands; artists like Jan Toorop and Piet Mondrian settled here to immortalize the sky over Zeeland. To this day, Domburg has lost none of its former grandeur!
Also in the immediate vicinity is Het Veerse Meer, an attractive water sports area for sailors, surfers, anglers, and divers, with the romantic port town of Veere as its center.
In keeping with regional specifications, a main building consisting of three residential units, an administration house, and an outbuilding has now been created on the estate: a 21st-century country house with all comforts but with a nod to the 19th century. The towers are typical of the country houses of the Zeeland patricians. These towers probably served to look out over the island and the sea and referred to Italian architecture. Wichersoord also has a tower, with the possibility on the 2nd floor to overlook the wide surroundings up to the water tower of Domburg from the balcony. A beautifully integrated and pleasantly heated natural swimming pool in the water feature could not be missing on this estate.
Both the grounds and the buildings of Wichersoord are housed in a foundation/BV. The primary goal of this foundation is to protect and preserve this unique nature reserve over a long period. This is achieved by keeping the forest, water, and garden as natural as possible. This also applies to the main house and the outbuildings. However, the foundation's board is aware that sustainable maintenance of the estate, given its limited resources and size, is only possible through the recreational rental of the main building and outbuildings. Opening the hiking area to the public also contributes to financial sustainability through the Nature Beauty Act. To make the estate energy-neutral and sustainable, finally, a small part of the grounds was sacrificed for solar panels without losing natural values.
