Trarego-Viggiona, with about 390 inhabitants, is located approximately 4.7 km above Cannero Riviera in a quiet and sunny position offering a magnificent view of the lake and surrounding mountains. An extensive network of walking and hiking trails crisscrosses the area. The municipality consists of the three villages Trarego, Viggiona, and Cheglio, situated at about 770 meters altitude at the foot of Monte Carza (1,116 m). The particularly favorable climatic conditions and the indescribably beautiful view made the area a tourist attraction as early as the 1960s. Those who explore the partly untouched nature on old mule tracks with open eyes will discover many well-preserved witnesses of bygone days, such as grain mills, the former community dairy, and the hydroelectric power station, which at the beginning of the 20th century generated the entire energy supply for the surrounding villages. Lovers of good food will find the typical osterias here, where the local Vino Nostrano is served with trout from the clear streams or in autumn dishes with game, chestnuts, or porcini mushrooms. Art and culture enthusiasts should make a detour to the Chiesa Vecchia in Viggiona, where the original Romanesque structure was architecturally cleverly connected to the newer baroque parish church by a Via Crucis; the design was provided in the 1960s by students of the Stuttgart Art Academy.
